I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest location or at the mains valve outside. If you cannot find the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

While waiting, remove any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
