I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the tap to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main shutoff valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate a water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside your home to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from growing, give our emergency plumber a call, any time of the day or night. We will be there promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any important possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
