I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the water to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go straight to the main water valve for your home. If you are unable to find the tap to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting, clear away any important possessions close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, a lot of appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
