I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest location and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to get things sorted.

While you wait, begin mopping up any water, place a bucket to catch any drips, and clear away important possessions from the area. If the mains water is turned off, then also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
