I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. If you are unable to find the main valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside the house to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, clear away any important items, clean up any water, and place a container to catch drips. You should also turn off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
