I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to fix the leak.

In the meantime, begin cleaning up any water, put a container to catch drips, and clear away significant items from the affected area. If the house water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.
