I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest service valve or at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

While waiting, remove any significant possessions close to the leak, and clean up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.
