I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

Many appliances and fixtures have taps that can be turned off. For example, the toilet will have an isolating tap below or beside the cistern. If you cannot locate a tap, or that doesn’t stop the leak, then turn off the mains shutoff tap to cut off all water to your property.

Once that’s sorted, give us a ring, whatever the day or time is. We will be there shortly to resolve the problem.

While you wait, begin wiping up any water, position a bucket to catch drips, and clear away important items from the area. If the mains water is turned off, also switch off the heating for the hot water.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating valves also.
